SOLARIS Fellow medical growers, hello and welcome💙
I warmly suggest you to read through the end if you try to germinate old seeds
That time I'm so proud and exited to release the first spotlight about my next project, let's first get a step back:
In 2016 circa, Dinafem, a well known breeder from Spain, released a new strain called "Purple orange CBD" on their website, a mostly sativa California orange diesel fenotype, high in CBD, with purple-orange colors in late flowering and chocolate-orange smell and taste 😍 selling her as a unique and unexpected genetic they where so proud of.
At the time I was a newbie green fingers, and I was learning doing as much genetic as possible during the summer time (and sometimes even in other seasons) while being strictly outdoor only, and when I first saw that genetic online I instantly falled in love reading all the comments about her. The only "difficulty" was the THC:CBD ratio and a weak 5% THC as analysis of the samples report, leaving me with big doubt about the waste of energy and time for a weak product, filling my jars with useless weed.
Some years later, maybe around 2018 or 19 I finally bought some seeds of the so waited Purple Orange CBD, and guess what? No luck! All the seedlings died; usually when you lost the frame of opportunity (in outdoor) is better to think about the next year because you get too close to autumn.😶🌫️
So I just skipped the idea, and that's it...
During the years I wondered how this genetic could express in my garden, but I lean mostly on Autoflowers due to many factors during my growing years, and I totally forget about her.
but now, ten years later, more old and wisdom than before;
I jumped back to this promising genetic because I think that high CBD could be the future of my cannabis plantation, and the reason is mainly that, i cannot handle high potency strain anymore, I go nowhere but paranoid and a lot of negative effects, but I still love growing this majestic plant, even if I don't use it so much and the passion keep me going on beside any "material earn" or "useless jars in the stash" searching for the perfect strain.
There is a HUGE PROBLEM though 😅
Dinafed has closed the doors in 2019 after a long fight with the law, I don't want to tell you what happened in this diary, but I can tell you that all the seeds of Dinafem you can buy today (if you can buy any) are date back, at least, 2019.
This mean, from a grower prespective, that most of the Dinafem seeds available today are no more viable, unless the shop, stored them in freezer.
Since i bought a 3 pack seeds of Dinafem's Purple Orange CBD ( in the luxurious aluminum case, and the fancy blister ) I can tell you that is true, the seed are no more viable, at least when you apply classic methods, probably because the seeds are old somewhere around 6 to 8 years. The first bean I try to pop in the wet towel like many in the past days broke up, but stopped right after, like all non-viable seeds.
So I did my research and i managed to sprout it using a clever idea.
Basically non-viable seeds lost moisture, this lead to loss in enzymes, that the life beginning needs to create the first root, without those complex the seed cannot use energy, and in fact breaks up, but not sprout .
My research suggested to use oxygen peroxide, sugars and enzymes; so i make a mixture of those ingredients and soak the seed for 13 hours, then I moved it in a paper towel, followed by some drops of this mixture, zipped in a food bag under a controlled atmosphere of 25°C
I mixed in a glass (200ml) of water:
- 2.5 ml/L of Cannazym by Canna
- half teaspoon of organic honey
- 3 drops of 3% Oxygen peroxide
The magic worked!
Only one day after wet paper and the seed sprouted, I dropped a few more mixture and two days after the sprout was long and hairy, very healthy, you can see the picture, i was amazed it worked out, this year i failed to germinate 5 old seeds before this one, in the attempt to clean out my stagnant collection of genetics and now I know the trick and I really hope to help as many people as possible 💜
I put the germinated seed in the final pot, and few hours later she rised from the soil and the life begun.

SOLARIS Hello everyone🌻
She is growing, not in the best shape, i see she struggle a little, the grid is not helping and the lower leaves are trapped between moist and grid itself, i cannot remove it, so for now she need to fight a little more.
I hope for the best, she is the only photo growing this summer.

@BernMars, hello my friend, the grid is made by metal, i shaped it to fit around the pot border so I can clip it in position, you can find this kind of grid in big rolls, where you buy just a piece, and cut it to size it at the measure of your needs, it purpose is to get a nasty cat away from the soil surface, he already killed two plants this year so I must protect them from his digging instinct 😅
Thank you for passing by my diary, always a pleasure😊
