Epokwan I was going to exclusively do autos outdoors this season but the weather has been against me. My autos are going a bit slower than I hoped, non-stop rain and clouds when they should be vegging and becoming monsters in the sun!
Because I'm concerned about yields (and also just for fun)- I'm going to do 2 photoperiods as well, one sativa dominant and one indica dominant. I'm excited to try this Zkittalicious from Exotic Seeds, as well as some of their autos this season. Thanks again for the prize, chaps! The other will be Mimosa Champagne from Female Seeds.
Germination had me down the last round of seeds I popped. Something just wasn't right, I think it had something to do with some cold snaps we had while I was soaking seeds, and I lost a few. Fellow grower @Shinsimilla shared his method with me and had me wondering if I should rather just skip soaking seeds altogether, so I'm giving that a try this run.
My new (hopefully fool-proof) germination method:
- Take a paper towel - not just any paper towel, find a brand that has no added chemicals - in South Africa we have "Dinu" brand
- Fold it in half, then half again (4 layers in total)
- Boil the kettle and pour boiling water over the towels, completely drenching them. Boiling will kill off anything funky on the plate, the water and the paper
- Take a single sheet for the top layer, drench that too in the boiling water.
- Pour off any excess water and wait for them to completely cool.
- Place seed with the pointy end facing the direction you want the root to come out (you can tilt the plate if you want gravity to direct the taproot)
- Place the top sheet gently over the seed
- Cover with another plate for darkness
- Put on a heat mat at around 25 degrees C (I use a thermostat to control the temp)
- Make sure the paper towels don't dry out. Only using one layer on top keeps the seed breathable
- Wait for a long tap root then transplant into medium using mychorrizae and trichoderma fungal innoculants.
This method works really well, I don't know why I've been so keen on soaking seeds first when they really don't need all that much moisture to crack open. I'll be doing this from now on. Something to note that without soaking, I did notice a higher chance of helmet heads - the seed shell not coming off right away. Using a humidity dome until they sprout helps, but I just help the shell off gently so it can get light as soon as possible.
Peace, fellow growers!
@Exotic_Seed, thanks - very excited about this one! I'm a huge fan of anything Zkittlez related and the Blue Monkey genetics sound extremely intriguing! 👌
