First, ensure something you don't realize is occurring is not the cause -- specifically light pollution - from ducts or opening tent during dark cycle of flower phase or anything like that... Yes, a minute of light pollution is a problem, lol. It's completely avoidable so don't do it, if you are. No reason to 'peek' during dark cycle of flower phase, ever.
The idea behind UV is that it damages the plant and its response is a net positive while considering that damage. Even though you can probably find some research that supports it, it's still more of a hypothesis than a documented / known relationship with a predictable effect.
So, yes, it could be the UV as it definitely damages the plant. Stress can cause herms.
However, not all plants are robust. Some hermie more easily than others. If it is happening consistently with multiple strains and seeds, I would look at adjusting how much you use UV per day, but if it's rare i'd chalk it up to the genetics.
I'd rather criticize my own efforts first to be certain... than automatically blame and outside source of the problem. Time will tell.
UV won't do much for you until trichome production ramps up, so if you are applying it from day 1, i'd adjust that, regardless of whether it is 'a' cause of the hermie issue (again, this is a hypothesis and no gaurantee it helps you plant in the first place, so keep that in your mind too). if you continue to get herms regardless of variety of genetics, you might be applying too much per day etc etc... apply some deductive reasoning, start changing 1 thing at a time, and when the problems ceases, you'll have a better idea of what was causing it.
Plants outside develop resistance to UV. This is why 'field' tests involving uv and marijuana didn't show any correlation. The 'maybe' of UV is only with indoor research.
as you try to be systematic to figure it out, remember the sample sizes you deal with are part of the problem too... it's easy to be fooled by a false positive or negative when dealing with only a handful of plants. Keep an open mind about cause/effect and it may take several more plants to be certain.
