LEDs use much less energy than incandescent bulbs because diode light is much more efficient, power-wise, than filament light. LED bulbs use more than 75% less energy than incandescent lighting. ... Another advantage of LEDs is the “hassle factor.” LEDs last a lot longer than a regular bulb.

Wikipedia would be the easiest way to find your answers. Some lights have filaments, others "excited" gasses, others electrical discharge and others a combination of gas and electrical discharge, amongst others. Browse - Light Emitting Diode, incandescent light bulb, High Intensity Discharge lights (or HID lights) and florescent lights. Hope this helps.......... Organoman.

Will males revert back to veg if daylight is increased by only minutes daily?I'm flowering a male to create new genetics/seeds. I flower the males outside early spring (US - Michigan). Will more than 12hrs sunlight affect the males like it does females? Could I leave them outside without them reverting back to vegetative as the day hours increase?
