OG Fun

BC_Green Isn't she beautiful! I love every single stage and I can't wait to see what this plant does! As you can see, my grow setup is fairly humble. The platform is made of 2x4’s, plywood scrap, and a few screws. I placed a plastic washing machine drain pan on top to catch water. The containers are paint bucket liners with a bit of clear packing tape to clamshell them together (allowing me greater control over heat and humidity) and holes poked in the bottom to allow excess water to drain (there is also some gravel at the bottom of the container to improve drainage). The container has a brown lunch bag covering it (to block the sun/heat), with the bottom cut out and taped to the sides to ensure it doesn't interfere with drainage. I have a digital humidity/temperature gauge (which I normally use for curing) taped to the side to monitor conditions. I am growing inside my house to avoid using a space heater to grow in my garage (I can get away with this as the plants will be placed outside for flowering–I would never keep a flowering plant inside my house without a grow tent and carbon filter, lol). The light is an HLG RSPEC 100, and I have it plugged into a WIFI smart socket scheduled to automatically turn on the light at 5:59 am and off at 11:59 pm. I am running the light at about 50% for the first week and will increase it from there.

BC_Green What can I say, OG Fun is a lot of fun to grow! And what a sun / grow light-loving beast! Lighting Update: I noticed the intense 12:00p sunlight (peak intensity) pouring through the window onto her while the LED grow light was running–probably too much light for a seedling, although she was fully upright and the leaves were green and tilting toward the sun. I knew from my Bannizzle experiments (my past grow) that higher light intensity during vegetation and flowering produced bigger yields. And that notion was reinforced by this study (for flowering): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8144505/ But I hadn’t checked to see what light intensity is best at each stage. I downloaded the Photone app (a well-reviewed grow light meter app) to measure light intensity (in Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density, or PPFD, which is how many photons of light the plant can actually use every second). Then I made a homemade diffuser out of printer paper (per the instructions inside the app) and found that my light intensity (1,000 PPFD with the grow light and sun combined and 765 PPFD with the sun alone) was well above their recommendations for a seedling (100-300 PPFD) as outlined in one of Photone’s well-written article: https://growlightmeter.com/lighting-requirements-of-cannabis-over-the-full-grow-cycle/ And also discussed here: https://growdiaries.woodroom.tel/journal/how-to-increase-the-dli-in-the-cannabis-grow-room-for-better-yields I decided to schedule my grow light to turn off from 10:30a - 12:45p while she receives direct sunlight (on cloudy days I override the WIFI socket and run the light during this time). I also decided to change my WIFI socket to shut off the grow light at 9:59p (it turns on at 5:59a) so that total light hours are kept to 16. I think this combination will make for the easiest transition for her to move outdoors. I do recognize that the total DLI from the sun added to the total DLI of the grow light for the remaining hours is a bit higher than recommended, but the plant seems healthy and I don't want to make too many adjustments at once. I also became curious how much DLI she would receive growing outdoors (so I can prepare her for similar DLI before I put her outside). This is a cool tool for that: https://dli.suntrackertech.com/ Finally, I implemented a container rotation schedule (with the Fruity Freak plants I am growing) and now move the plants one position counterclockwise every day. After four days I will turn all containers ninety degrees. This should promote more even plant growth. Water I am watering her once a week (my native soil is dense and retains water) using about two tablespoons worth. She only gets melted snow warmed to room temperature or captured rainwater to keep soil pH and conditions consistent with the outdoors. Airflow The clamshell is now removed. I am running my ceiling fan during daylight hours. I am also using an oscillating fan while she receives direct sunlight (I am using a WIFI socket to turn it on and off automatically for me) to help cool her and begin strengthening the stem before the transition outdoors. BC_Green It has been another amazing week of OG Fun growing and my skills in growing with her. She is growing fast and loves the light! I am simultaneously running a journal for three Fruity Freak plants, and it outlines all of the grow details, including how I pulled a soil test and what I did with the results. I definitely recommend checking it out!

BC_Green I used native soil (which I have found to have a bit too much clay) to plant in, and unfortunately, it compacted a bit too much. When transplanting to a larger container, I mixed 50% native soil with 25% peat moss and 25% perlite to loosen up the soil and allow for better drainage and space for the roots. Hopefully, she will start taking off!

BC_Green The tips of my leaves and in between the veins are browning. After transplanting this plant into a larger pot (and three others at the same time), the plants were further from the center of the grow light, and that decreased light intensity. Therefore, I lowered the grow light. This may be driving the browning. I am also looking into the pH and nutrients.

BC_Green I discovered my issues were unrelated to light or pH–rather, it was a lack of nutrients. I used a water-soluble synthetic 20-10-20 fertilizer ( at Home Depot) to deliver nutrients immediately, and she started rebounding! The first dose was about 1/10th of a tsp per gallon. Today, I am trying ½ tsp per gallon. Fingers crossed, she will start to take off!

BC_Green Everything is going great with the 20-10-20 water-soluble fertilizer. I have switched from captured rainwater (with higher acid and lower micronutrients) to my tap water (which is 6.8 pH and has more micronutrients). Otherwise, she looks very happy, so I’m not making any changes.

BC_Green Wishing everyone a Happy and green St Patrick’s Day! This OG Fun plant grew 4” this past week and seems to be picking up steam! As the nutrients seem well-balanced, I boosted light intensity from 300 PPFD to 600 PPFD (measured with the Photone app). She is still getting direct sunlight from the south window from about 10a-1p and is now picking up a little afternoon sun from the west window. Otherwise, she’s happy, and so am I!

BC_Green OG Fun continues her incredible growth, and it is a beauty to behold! I can’t wait until I get to harvest this completely unique strain! Light has been increased to 750 PPFD (measured by Photone app) by allowing the plant to grow closer to the light without adjusting the height. I found some spots on a few leaves and there are brown tips on two lower leaves. I used water only to water her today to clear out any built up salts. I am also going to switch fertilizers to something non-chelated as I just figured out that EDTA can cause nutrient lock out issues in acidic soils with high calcium (like mine).

BC_Green This beautiful plant grew another 3” this past week! However, she has some yellowing leaves. I watered with water only both times this week, and she may be showing signs of nutrient deficiency as a result. I plan to give some water-soluble fertilizer when the soil dries out. I have transitioned her to the sunroom to prepare her to go outdoors in a month. I will place her outside on the deck for increasing periods to help her harden off.

BC_Green This beautiful plant grew another 2.5” in the past week despite the transition to the sunroom (with cooler temps), lower grow light hours (I am slowly dropping them to match the 14 hours she will get from the sun once outside), and the addition of some outdoor time each day. I have been keeping an eye on some yellowing leaves (that started before the transition). They appear to be in locations where new growth is sprouting underneath, but it may still be a nutrient deficiency. I did give her a small amount of fertilizer two days ago (1/16th of a tsp of Pennington 20-10-20 in two cups of water). I am testing my own fertilizer blend on another plant today, and if all goes well, I will apply a half-strength dose to this plant later this week. My mix (in 1 liter of water) will consist of: Soy hydrolysate (12-0-0) - 1.33 grams (160 ppm) Super Phosphate (0-18-0) - 0.38 grams (30 ppm) Langbeinite (0-0-22 and S 22% and Mg 10.8%) - 0.96 grams (175 ppm) Micro nutrient blend (Prevegenics 0.75% Mg, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, B, Ni, Fe) - ¾ tsp

BC_Green OG Fun is having a blast now that she is getting outside again (after some colder weather). She’s now 20” and healthy! I had to update my new fertilizer blend, but so far, there are no issues. I am giving her (per gallon): Soy hydrolysate (12-0-0) - 4.2 grams (160 ppm nitrogen (133 from soy hydrolysate + 27 from liquid fertilizer)) Liquid Fertilizer (4-10-3) - 2.6 grams (30 ppm phosphorus - measured with a cup on a scale) Langbeinite (0-0-22 and S 22% and Mg 10.8%) - 3.28 grams (175 ppm potassium (158 from langbeinite crushed with a hammer + 17 from liquid fertilizer)) Micro nutrient blend (0.75% Mg, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, B, Ni, Fe) - 15 ml I am currently dosing the soy hydrolysate with the langbeinite separately from the 4-10-3 and separately from the micronutrient blend–but I am working on combining them in such a way that avoids precipitation.

BC_Green After she started developing -preflowers 4/14 (thus the light smell designation last week), I moved her (and my other plants) outside full-time. She is loving the extra light and space! I am using a floodlight from 8p-10p to discourage flowering with lower light hours. BC_Green OG Fun is loving the sun! Since she moved outside and I switched to using my fertilizer blend, there has been no additional chlorosis on any leaves! There are two or three discolored leaves from before, but nothing new has appeared in two weeks, and is she looking beautiful! BC_Green OG Fun and I are enjoying this lazy rainy Sunday together. I was going to move her to my side yard with the other ladies, but I love looking out at her–she has kind of become my muse. She’s branching out beautifully and has a classic Christmas tree shape. As she's getting plenty of sun and growing healthy, I’m going to keep her up here for the time being. Her pre-flowers are slowly starting to disappear, but no other changes to report this week. BC_Green After my post last week, I decided it was time to move OG Fun to the side yard so that she can get the sun she deserves. But then it rained all week and she started to flower, even though there is more than 14 hours of daylight now, lol. Oh, well, such are the challenges of starting way early and heading outside early. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and top her since a monster clone could be fun to experiment with, and her growth rate could cause her to be visible from the street, thus I need to start pruning and training, even if it is late. She was 34", and is now 29".

BC_Green OG Fun is bushing out beautifully after the topping cut. She is healthy and holding strong despite the 5” of rain month-to-date. I haven’t even been able to deliver water-soluble nutrients because of the waterlogged soil/media, but I will in a day or two. Slugs are attacking other plants in my garden, and chewed on some of my cannabis plants last year, but haven’t touched OG Fun or the other plants I am growing this year. So things are going smoothly!

BC_Green OGF is doing wonderfully after the topping. She’s continuing to branch out and looks extremely healthy. I have been trying to ignore these early flowers, but they smell incredible–a classic skunk with bright citrus–I love getting it on my hands! I can’t wait until she’s flowering in the fall! In the meantime, I noticed the interior of the plant is getting dense, with some leaves lying on top of each other. I defoliated a bit to open up air flow.

BC_Green OG Fun is growing beautifully, and despite the ongoing rainfall, no signs of disease! I could not deliver nutrients this week because of the rain, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at her. There are a few holes in some apical leaves, so I am keeping a close eye out for what might be causing it, but the problem is extremely minute. Her clone is doing well in the shed with the autoflower I am growing. It was visited by a giant leopard moth today, but thankfully, their young pose no real risk to cannabis. I cleared off a little white fuzz on a leaf--but thankfully, a daddy long legs took the sentry up there :) Her flowers still smell incredible, so I'm definitely looking forward to this fall!

BC_Green OG Fun is cruising along and getting bushy! She looks beautiful, and the smell, well, it’s already reaching my front door when she’s baking in the sun, lol. I noticed some powdery mildew on a few of her apical leaves today, so I went ahead and sprayed her with some neem oil. Not an enormous surprise considering the amount of rain we have received over the past month. I also moved Fruity Freak E to the other side of my garden path so that I could separate the three remaining plants (including OG Fun) and give them room to grow and hopefully reduce disease spread. I watered once this week using my fertilizer blend (per gallon): - Soy hydrolysate (12-0-0) - 2.43 grams (160 ppm nitrogen (77 ppm from soy hydrolysate + 27 ppm from liquid fertilizer + 56 ppm from potassium nitrate)) - Liquid Fertilizer (4-10-3) - 2.6 grams (30 ppm phosphorus - measured with a cup on a scale) - Potassium Nitrate (13.5-0-46.2) - 1.56 grams (175 ppm potassium (158 ppm from potassium nitrate + 17 ppm from liquid fertilizer)) Unfortunately, her clone failed to root, but no big deal. Perhaps I will try again later. Otherwise, smooth sailing right now. I am heading out of town at the end of the week (so no updates next weekend). But I am setting up a soaker hose (controlled by a WIFI watering timer that I can adjust remotely based on weather), I will water her with nutrients before I go, and I will spray her with HOCL if I see the mildew return.

BC_Green After returning from my trip (I was gone more than a week), OG Fun is still extremely healthy. She is suffering from a bit more apical leaf damage than before, so I applied some neem oil spray. The damage is slower than plant growth and not truly threatening at this time–and plant damage can trigger greater terpene response, making it potentially beneficial for me. Before I left, I set up a WIFI timer on my hose bib and ran a standard hose across my plants. I punctured holes on the bottom side of the hose where each of the plants is sitting to allow for targeted watering. Everyone was a bit overwatered with the rain, but no real signs of stress. I also removed lower bud sites (before I left) to focus the plant's energy on creating larger bud sites at the more apical locations. Otherwise, OG Fun continues to stack her bud sites beautifully, definitely looking forward to harvest!

BC_Green OG Fun is looking great! She is still holding onto her flowers from her premature flowering (even as my Fruity Freak flowers disappear and head back into a vegetative stage). It will be very interesting to see what she yields. We had some high temperatures this week, and I am still dialing in my watering for her. But I’ve punched a few more holes in the hose I have connected to a WIFI timer to increase the volume she receives with each watering. She continues to suffer some leaf damage, and I finally figured out the culprit: leaf hoppers. I sprayed down the plant with some Captain Jack’s Deadbug brew, and hopefully that stops the progress for now. BC_Green It is interesting to watch OG Fun respond to the premature flowering, keeping all of its flowers–as compared to my original Fruity Freak grow, where all of the flowers have essentially disappeared, and those plants have returned to a vegetative state. I am very curious to see what happens this fall. I did notice some of the sugar leaves browning, so I decided to remove buds with those to avoid any potential bud rot. That being said, it was only three sites. The resin was very impressive when handling them. I continue to chase off woolly aphids, but they are causing much damage, thankfully. Otherwise, I continue to water her with my vegetative fertilizer blend and also gave a micronutrient fertilizer mid-week. BC_Green A sad day my friends, my OG Fun was showing signs of bud rot on her premature flowers, so I had to strip her of everything in order to prevent the disease from spreading. I had read several sites that recommended leaving on flowers during re-veg for premature flowering (and that worked with my Fruity Freak plants)–but having worked with this plant, I would harvest larger buds (like the ones on this plant) in the future. The bud size/density is a risk for bud rot (in my opinion), especially given an extended period of time and a high humidity environment (like an outdoor grow in the Mid-Atlantic US). My only regret is not having done it sooner, maybe I could have actually enjoyed them–but I tossed them all, so I don’t risk bringing bud rot into my drying area. I also sprayed the plants down with HOCL after I stripped the buds to hopefully kill any remaining disease. She still has enough fan leaves to recover and produce, I’m just not sure how much, or what quality. It is an interesting and humbling lesson learned. This is why I love growing; even though moments like this are unpleasant, they always drive me to learn from the experience and research how I can do it better next time.

BC_Green She's recovering well from the trimming last week. There's new vegetative growth across the plant, which is great because some of the older growth looks like it will be dropped in the coming weeks. Otherwise, no issues.

BC_Green Another week of smooth sailing. I am watering every other day (unless the rain does it for me), and I am fertilizing every other watering. So every 4-5 days, she’s getting nutrients. I received my Mono-Potassium Phosphate this week and designed a new fertilizer blend using it. The new recipe is: Mono Potassium Phosphate - 0.5 grams per gallon Potassium Nitrate - 1.36 grams per gallon Soy hydrolysate - 3.52 grams per gallon Otherwise, just waiting for flowering :)

BC_Green She’s flowering! I’ve been busy, and will continue to be, so I’ll post as I am able. I will need to defoliate the center, but otherwise, she’s looking solid. I can’t move her container, unfortunately, as her roots escaped through a hole in the bottom of the container. So I am going to have to manage growth between her and her neighbor (Fruity Freak 2, from my other grow, and planted in the ground) to make sure they don’t grow into each other. Otherwise, smooth sailing right now.

BC_Green Everything is going well, a few more weeks before harvest, but she’s smells wonderful. The weather has been perfect, all pests disappeared, and there are no signs of disease–hopefully everything continues exactly like this!

BC_Green Week 35 now, she's still flowering. Unfortunately, there has been a ton of rain here lately and this little lady has a bit of mildew on her. I'm keeping an eye on her, but I'm not sure I will take her into my drying area and risk contamination. This was a free seed, and buds smell amazing--all of the Fruity Freak seeds I ordered did awesome, and I have more flower than I need, so I'm not stressed about this one either way.

BC_Green In the end, it's awesome she bounced back. She would have benefitted from a sunnier location and not re-vegging (as it would have improved her health and helped prevent issues), but still a fun grow and experience–and super cool to be one of a few to actually get to try this strain.
